RINDGE, N.H. (June 16, 2017) – Freshman Catherine Purves (Dalkeith, Scotland) of the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team has been named Northeast-10 Conference Track Rookie of the Year for the outdoor season, as announced on Friday morning by the Conference office.
It is the second major award of the year for Ravens track & field. Dage Minors of the men's team claimed NE10 Track Athlete of the Year honors for the indoor season in March.
Purves became the first freshman in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships this spring, as she represented the Ravens in the 400-meter hurdles in May. She finished 22nd at the national meet.
Purves' top 400-meter hurdles time of the year was a mark of 59.96 seconds, which she turned in at the Penn Relays on April 27. The time was good enough to allow her to finish in a tie for 13th in the country, and was the season's fastest time in the East Region, as well as the NE10.
The 400-meter hurdles was one of two events in which Purves picked up All-East Region honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in May. She was also honored in the 100-meter hurdles, where she turned in a time of 14.09 seconds, to finish second at the NE10 Championships on May 5. Purves finished the year ranked second in the East Region in the 100-meter hurdles.
