ALBANY, N.Y. (October 11, 2017) – Making one of the toughest road trips in the Northeast-10 Conference, to face an opponent which has given them fits over much of the last decade, the Ravens made one stick on Wednesday night in the Capital District. An 84th-minute strike from junior midfielder Nathalia Maria da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was the only goal of the game, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team dealt Saint Rose a 1-0 defeat in NE10 play at Plumeri Sports Complex.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 7-2-2 (6-2-2 NE10), while Saint Rose falls to 9-2-1 (8-2-0 NE10). For the Ravens, it snapped a 14-match winless streak (0-13-1) against Saint Rose, over a nine-year stretch which included six postseason meetings (0-5-1). The last win for Franklin Pierce over Saint Rose predated the Golden Knights' current facility, with the Ravens posting a 1-0 win on the road in a game played at Albany Academy on Sept. 17, 2008. A fellow countrywoman of da Silva, eventual All-American Gabriela Demoner, provided the only goal in the 2008 victory.
The only goal of Wednesday evening's proceedings came with just 6:49 to play in regulation. Junior midfielder Bruna Tavares (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) provided the setup with a one-touch cross from the left side. The pass would find da Silva, who put her shot high on the far side for her fifth goal of the season, tying for the team lead.
The Ravens controlled the game statistically throughout the night. Franklin Pierce finished the contest with advantages of 14-5 in shot attempts, 6-1 in shots on goal and 2-0 in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) stopped the only shot on her goal to post the win (7-2-2) and pick up her sixth shutout of the season, which was also the 20th clean sheet of her career. Cook is the sixth netminder in Franklin Pierce history to tally 20 career shutouts.
At the other end of the field, sophomore goalkeeper Marika Laurendeau (9-2-1) made five saves against six shots in the losing effort for Saint Rose.
The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 14, when they travel to Pace for an NE10 contest. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Pace Stadium in Pleasantville, N.Y.
