Johansson Named W-League Player of the Week
Franklin Pierce All-American also earns "Team of the Week" honors
for third-straight week
RINDGE, N.H. (June 11, 2009) - Franklin Pierce University junior All-American Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) earned Player of the Week honors from the W-League of the United Soccer Leagues (USL). She highlighted the W-League's Team of the Week for the third-straight week.
Johansson earned the honors after she scored a goal and recorded an assist in the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues 2-1 win over the Boston Renegades on Saturday. Johansson's first point against the Renegades was an assist on Whitney Palmer's equalizer in the eighth minute. Johansson netted the match-winning goal in the 79th minute as Hudson Valley maintained its perfect record at 4-0-0.
After four matches Johansson leads the W-League with seven goals
(on just nine shots) and 17 points. She also leads Hudson Valley
with three assists (3rd W-League). Johansson broke out
with four goals in a 6-0 win over the New York Magic on May
23rd to earn her first W-League Team of the Week honor.
Her second Team of the Week selection came after she scored a goal
and dished two assists in the Lady Blues 4-2 win over the
Washington Freedom on May 31st. Johansson has either
scored or assisted the Lady Blues opening goal in all four matches
this season and scored or assisted on the winning goal in the
team's last three matches.
Hudson Valley (4-0-0) returns to action on Friday when they host the Connecticut Passion at Newburgh Free Academy at 7:30 p.m. Johansson and the Lady Blues will be in New England on Wednesday, June 17, when they visit Harvard Stadium to face the Renegades at 4 p.m.
The two-time Franklin Pierce All-American will return for her junior season for the Ravens after recording 40 goals and ten assists for 90 points over her first two collegiate seasons. Johansson's 40 career goals are 11th best in program history. She earned Daktronics East Region and Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year honors after posting an NCAA Division II best 29 goals to go with five assists for a conference-leading 63 points. Johansson racked up five hat tricks and netted a conference best eight match-winning goals for the Ravens last fall. Johansson also earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team honors having achieved a 3.969 cumulative grade point average.
Franklin Pierce (15-4-2, 11-2-1 NE-10), ranked 20th in the final postseason National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, captured a share of its sixth Northeast-10 regular season championship this fall and made an NCAA Division II record 17th-straight tournament appearance, reaching the second round.
