Stojkovic and Serbia Roll Past Estonia in World University Games Finale
Serbia women's soccer places 11th at Games with 4-0 win
BELGRADE, Serbia (July 10, 2009) - Franklin Pierce University rising junior Snezana Stojkovic (Vitojevci, Serbia) and the women's soccer team from host Serbia took 11th place at the 2009 World University Games with a 4-0 victory over Estonia at Stadium FC Smederevo today.
Stojkovic, who is keeping a blog of her experience as a member of the host delegation at the University Games for the Franklin Pierce athletics website, started for the second time in the tournament for Serbia and played the first half as they built a 2-0 halftime lead. Serbia added two more goals in the final 45 minutes for the 4-0 final. Teammate Kristina Krstic scored three goals for the Serbians.
Serbia posted a 3-3-0 record over
its six matches at the University Games, posting wins over Canada
(2-1), Hungary (5-0) and now Estonia (4-0). Stojkovic
appeared in four of the six games, starting two, for a total of 110
minutes played. In edition to today's start, she started Serbia's
5-0 win over Hungary.
Stojkovic, who attended the NCAA Student-Athlete Development Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., in May, has appeared in 16 matches, with three starts, over two seasons for Franklin Pierce. She collected her first career point with an assist in Franklin Pierce's 4-3 comeback win at Le Moyne College last fall.
Franklin Pierce (15-4-2, 11-2-1 NE-10), ranked 20th in the final postseason National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll last fall, opens its 2009 season on Thursday, August 27, when it visits Caldwell College for a match at 2 p.m. The Ravens home opener is slated for Friday, September 4, against Florida Southern College at 4 p.m.
