Gabriela Demoner & Rachel Smith Named NE-10 Players of the Year
Smith and Angelika Johansson also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I selections as well
RINDGE, N.H. (October 30, 2009) – Franklin
Pierce University women’s soccer standouts Grabriela
Demoner (Vitoria, Brazil) and Rachel Smith
(Chichester, N.H.) were named the Northeast-10
Women’s Soccer Player of the Year and Co-Defensive Player of
the Year, respectively on Friday. The announcement was made by the
league as it gets set to begin the conference championship
tournament on Sunday. It marks the second such awards for the
respective players in their collegiate careers. Demoner was also
named to the NE-10’s player of the year in 2007, while Smith
garnered the league’s top defensive honor last season.
By earning player-of-the-year status, Demoner and Smith were also
named to the Northeast-10 First-Team. Demoner earned the
distinction of being a first-team selection each of her four
collegiate seasons, while Smith earned all-conference honors for
the third-straight year – including back-to-back first-team
awards.
Demoner, a senior midfielder, led the league with three
player-of-the-week awards this season. She leads the entire nation
(NCAA Division I, II & III) in goals scored with 27 and has
collected six assists for a total of 60 points. The goals and
points were tops in the Northeast-10.
Demoner was already part of a list of eight Ravens who have earned
a conference player-of-the-year award during their career. By
earning her second such career honor on Friday, Demoner joined four
other Ravens as multiple conference player-of-the-year recipients.
The other four include: Nathalie Geeris (NECC 1994-95); Pauliina
Miettinen (NECC 1996-98); Meghan Welcome (NE-10 2002-03) and Laura
Hislop (NE-10 2004-05).
Smith, a senior back, became the first player in the
program’s storied history to win the defensive
player-of-the-year award on multiple occasions. Considered by many
to be one of the top backs in the nation – not just the
conference – Smith proved to be a rock wall for Franklin
Pierce on the defensive side this season. She also had a hand in
the offensive zone this season as she scored three goals to total
six points.
Smith’s award marked the third time in the last four years
Franklin Pierce has walked away with at least a share of the
league’s top defensive award. Alex Scavo was named the
Northeast-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, while Smith
has garnered the award in 2008 and 2009.
Demoner and Smith were not the only two Ravens to have awards
thrown upon them during the afternoon.
Joining those two on the Northeast-10 First-Team was junior forward
Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden), as she
earned first-team honors for the third-straight year. Johansson,
who entered this season as the league’s reigning player of
the year, scored 14 goals this season and assisted on three others
for 31 points. Her goals were tied for second in the league, while
her points were fourth most.
A pair of Ravens were named to the Northeast-10 Second-Team,
including sophomore midfielder Amanda Panaro (Rockland,
Mass.) and junior midfielder Shona Franklin
(Birmingham, England). Panaro had four goals and an assist
for nine points this season, while also providing a memorable
moment with a goal with 24 seconds remaining to lift Franklin
Pierce to a 1-0 win over Saint Anselm back on Oct. 20. Franklin
finished third on the team in points during the regular season with
13 (3 g, 7 a).
Rookie defender Julie Foster (Dennis, Mass.) was
named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team for her solid and steady
play on both ends of the field during her freshman season in 2009.
She contributed one goal and four assists for six points.
Also on Friday, CoSIDA and ESPN The Magazine announced their 2009
Academic All-District Teams. The national publication honored Smith
and Johansson for their work in the classroom by naming them to the
College Division’s Academic All-District I First-Team. By
earning that honor, both Smith and Johansson now move on for
consideration for ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America
squad, which will be announced at a later date. Smith sports a 3.82
GPA in business, while Johansson has a 3.97 GPA in mathematics.
Franklin Pierce gets set to kick off another post-season run this
Sunday when it plays host to Saint Anselm in the q uarterfinals of
the Northeast-10 Tournament. The contest will begin at 1 p.m. at
Sodexo Field on the Rindge campus. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3
for senior citizens and children 12 and under. Franklin Pierce
students who show their student ID at the gate will get in for
free.
