Snezana Stojkovic Blogs from the World University Games
Day One (June 30)
Flags of 140 different countries were raised in Belgrade. The Capital City of Serbia in this moment is the city where more than 9,000 Student-Athletes are competing in 15 different sports. I am proud to be part of this event and happy to be able to share my experiences with the Franklin Pierce community.
The atmosphere in the University Village, home of all the athletes and their coaches, is more than exciting. Athletes are walking dressed in their national colors and saying "Zdravo" to each other (which means "Hi" in Serbian). I was so happy to see Johannah and Jennifer Leedham! They are enjoying their time in my country and they are excited to meet new people and experience a different culture. I also talked to the Brazilian Women's Soccer Team because Gabriela Demoner and Thatiane Priesler (from Franklin Pierce) are our common friends. The world is so small and this University Games, besides being an opportunity for athletic achievements, are a great way to make friends and narrow the distance between people.
Although official opening is on July 1st, the competition started one day before. My national team won 2-1 against Canada. Honestly, we expected the Canadian team to be much better, but my team played hard and showed that we can win against the "big fish". From the start Canada was unsecured and we recognized their weaknesses. They were trying to get through our defense with long balls, but they couldn't make runs in the space close to our goal. Our midfield took over the game and we scored two goals by making short passes through the middle. In the second half there was a free kick on the top of our box and the Canadian's scored. Overall, it was a good game and we are happy to get out of this first challenge as winners. On July 2nd, we will play against Poland. We are all excited and ready to win again.
Looking forward for every new day and every new experience in this wonderful event!
