Leedhams and Great Britain Held by Poland, 74-64
Great Britain enters 5th-8th place classification round beginning
with Chinese Taipei tomorrow at 2 p.m. (EDT)
BELGRADE, Serbia (July 7, 2009) - Franklin Pierce women's basketball standouts Jennifer and Johannah Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Academy (Conn.)) and their teammates with the Great Britain national team suffered a 74-64 setback to Poland today at the 2009 World University Games at Zeleznik Sports Hall.
Great Britain was held to 34-percent shooting from the field (25-for-74), including 7-for-22 (32%) from three-point range, for their worst shooting outing of the tournament. Britain led by two points after both the first quarter (12-10) and at halftime (35-33), but fell behind by nine (55-46) at the end of the third quarter as Poland opened the second half with a 9-0 run and never trailed again.
Three-time All-American Johannah Leedham, a rising senior at
Franklin Pierce, was held to a tournament low seven points on
2-for-10 shooting from the field, including 1-of-5 from three-point
range, converting both free-throw attempts to go with three assists
and two rebounds in 29 minutes. Older sister Jennifer Leedham, a
two-time All-Northeast-10 selection recently named assistant coach
of the Ravens, came off the bench to add six points on 2-of-5
shooting from the field, 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, to go with
three rebounds and four assists in 20 minutes.
Johannah Leedham ranks fourth at the tournament in scoring with 18.4 points per game through five contests, while ranking fourth in three-point field goals (2.4/gm) and seventh in steals (2.4/gm).
Great Britain is back in action tomorrow when it opens the 5th-8th place classification round against Chinese Taipei at 2 p.m. (EDT). With a win, Britain will advance to Friday's 5th-place game against the winner of tomorrow's match up between Slovakia and Poland at 11:30 a.m. (EDT). A loss would have them in the 7th place game against the Slovakia/Poland loser at 11:30.
