Head Coach Richard Hurley enters
his seventh season at the helm of the Franklin Pierce University
softball team in 2009. Hurley, the longest-tenured coach in the
program's 20-year varsity history, is the program leader in career
wins, having accumulated 63 victories in his first six seasons with
the team.
In 2008, Hurley led the Ravens to a 9-33 record, including an 8-20
mark in the competitive Northeast-10 Conference. The team's eight
conference wins marked the most for the program under Hurley and
tied for the second-highest conference win total in school history.
One of Hurley's key recruits from last season, Emily Griffin, also
became the first player in program history to earn All-Conference
honors from the NE-10 with her selection to the second team.
The head coach guided the Ravens to double-digit win totals in
three of his first four seasons with the team, including his first
season in Rindge, in which he led the team to a 14-26-1 record
despite injuries to key players throughout the spring.
No stranger to the Northeast-10 Conference, Hurley came to the
Franklin Pierce after serving as an assistant coach at Assumption
College, in Worcester, Mass. While at Assumption, Hurley was
responsible for running infield and outfield practices in addition
to working with athletes on batting technique.
For the past seven summers, Hurley has coached the Massachusetts
Lightning U-18 Junior Olympic Team. The team captured the Lowell
ASA Invitational title in 2002, and has also won the Pony National
Qualifier (2001) and Leicester Pony Invitational (1999) under his
leadership. Hurley had prior experience with the Massachusetts
Lightning U-16 and U-14 programs over the previous four years
before taking over the U-18’s.
A member of the Central Massachusetts Softball Umpires
Association, he has served as the director of the St.
Bernard’s Winter Softball Clinic and attended the Olympic
Softball Team Clinic in Worcester and the Lisa Fernandez Clinic at
Brown University in 1996.
Hurley graduated from Mount Wachusett Community College with an
Associate’s degree in business administration. In addition to
his duties at Franklin Pierce, Hurley is a sales representative for
Creative Packaging, Inc., a company that manufactures corrugated
boxes, in Worcester, Mass.
Hurley resides in Leominster, Mass. with his wife, Mary Ellen, and
his daughter, Johanna (27).
