RINDGE, N.H. (October 24, 2011) -- Franklin Pierce University men's soccer standouts Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.) and Trent Roy (Stratham, N.H.) each picked up a weekly award from the Northeast-10 Conference on Monday as they earned the league's Goalkeeper and Freshman-of-the-Week award, respectively.
Papageorgiou earned the league's top goalkeeper award after he turned in a stellar week in two Franklin Pierce victories. He pitched a pair of shutouts, including making three saves in a 3-0 win over Saint Michael's last Wednesday, and then stopping five shots in Saturday's 1-0 triumph over Assumption. Papageorgiou made three of his five saves inside the final 12 minutes of regulation as the Ravens were clinging to their 1-0 advantage. For the season, Papageorgiou is 14-0-1 with eight shutouts, an .843 save percentage and a 0.51 goals against average.
Roy earned the league's top rookie honor after he scored a goal in each of the wins last week. Both tallies marked the first goals of his collegiate career. Roy's biggest goal of the week came against Assumption as he scored the match-winner early in the second half to lift Franklin Pierce to the 1-0 victory. Roy has appeared in 13 matches this season with three starts in the backfield and has two goals and one assist for five points.
Franklin Pierce, currently ranked No. 2 in the latest NSCAA Division II National Top-25 Poll, returns to action with a pair of matches this week to close out the 2011 regular season. The Ravens travel to Waltham, Mass. to face Bentley on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., and then travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on Le Moyne on Saturday at 1 p.m. A Franklin Pierce win in either match would lock up the NE-10 regular season championship for the second-consecutive season. The league's regular season champ would then earn home-field advantage throughout the entire post-season tournament, which begins next Tuesday, Nov. 1, with the conference quarterfinals. Tuesday's match at Bentley will be a rematch of last year's NE-10 tournament championship, which the Ravens won, 1-0, to claim the league crown.
