NE-10 CHAMPIONSHIP RELEASE & ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREES

BOYLSTON, Mass. (October 3, 2011) -- The Franklin Pierce University golf team turned in arguably the finest moment in program history on Monday as the Ravens finished second at the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Championship at the Cyprian Keyes Golf Course in Boylston, Mass. It marked the program's highest finish at the NE-10 Championship, as the Ravens carded a final round 314 (+26) to finish with a two round total of 615 (+39).

Franklin Pierce finished runner-up to Bentley, who won the conference crown with a 609 (+33). Adelphi, the league's defending champs, placed third with a 41-over-par 617. Franklin Pierce finished six spots ahead of American International (8th, 637, +61), who was picked to finish first in the 2011 preseason's coaches poll which was released last month.

The high NE-10 finish was also an exciting moment for the program as the Ravens were tabbed 10th in the same NE-10 preseason poll. The Ravens put themselves into position for a high finish after shooting a 13-over-par, 301, in the first round on Sunday, which marked the program's lowest score on a par 72 course in program history. Franklin Pierce entered Monday's final round in first place by three strokes over Bentley.

The team's second-place finish came about from five outstanding performances from Raven golfers, including senior co-captain B.J. Powers (Southbury, Conn.), who finished tied for fifth with a two-round total of 151 (+7). After firing a two-over-par, 74, on Sunday, Powers responded with an equally strong 77 (+5) on Monday.

Powers earned First-Team All-Northeast-10 honors for the first time in his career. His fifth-place finish tied for the highest finish in program history as former standout Aaron Nachoul turned the trick with a two-round score of 148 in the 2001 NE-10 Championship.

Another Raven earned first-team all-conference honors on the afternoon as junior Ian Landry (Loudon, N.H.) shot a final-round 77 (+5) to finish tied for eighth with a two-round score of 153 (+9). His 77 came one day after he shot a 76 (+4) during the opening round.

Powers and Landry became the second and third golfers in program history to earn first-team honors, joining Nachoul, who did it in 2001. Overall, four Ravens have earned All-NE-10 recognition in program history, including John Learson, who finished eighth at the 2000 NE-10 finals to earn second-team honors.

Three other Ravens finished in the top-20 of the individual standings, including senior co-captain Brian Fleckles (Sandwich, Mass.), who placed 13th with a two-round score of 156 (+12). It was an outstanding and fitting performance for Fleckles, who battled most of last season with an injury. Fleckles shot a 77 during Sunday's round and followed with a seven-over-par, 79, on Monday.

Freshman C.J. Konkowski (West Chesterfield, N.H.) tied for 16th in the tournament after he carded a two-round score of 157 (+13). He turned in a brilliant round of 74 (+2) on Sunday, but slipped a little on Monday with an 83 (+11). However, it did not take away from his high finish and strong play in his impressive debut at the conference championship.

Sophomore Adam Spencer (Jericho, Vt.) was the fifth Raven to finish in the top-20 as he tied for 20th with a two-round total of 158 (+14). He carded an 81 (+9) on Monday after shooting a five-over, 77, on Sunday. Spencer has recorded four top-20 finishes in his last five matches dating back to last season.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Tuesday when the Ravens take part in the Assumption Shootout at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Sutton, Mass.
