RINDGE, N.H. (June 13, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team has had 12 student-athletes named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II National Academic Squad, as announced earlier this spring by the NFHCA. Furthermore, freshman goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.), senior forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) and freshman forward Olivia Kowatch (Port Ewan, N.Y.) were all named Scholars of Distinction by the NFHCA, while the team earned the NFHCA’s National Academic Team Award.
In addition to Barnes, Canavan and Kowatch, the following nine players earned National Academic Squad accolades: sophomore forward Allison Collins (Sandown, N.H.), junior back Rachael Graves (Glenburn, Maine), senior forward Danielle Harris (Templeton, Mass.), junior forward Dayna Kowesky (Leominster, Mass.), sophomore forward Emma McGonagle (Rowley, Mass.), junior midfielder Raegan Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.), senior midfielder Erin Smith (Templeton, Mass.), sophomore back Jessica Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Nicole Thibeault (Turners Falls, Mass.).
To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have posted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher through the fall semester. In addition, this is the fifth year of the Scholars of Distinction program, which recognizes student-athletes carrying GPAs of 3.90 or higher. Franklin Pierce has now had 15 Scholar of Distinction selections over the five seasons the NFHCA has recognized them.
The 12 individual selections to the National Academic Squad matches the second-highest total in program history, eclipsed only by a collection of 14 honorees two years ago. The Ravens earned the National Academic Team Award -- which requires a team GPA of 3.0 or higher -- for the 12th time overall, and the third year in a row, with a semester GPA of 3.32.
Franklin Pierce has now had 147 selections to the NFHCA National Academic Squad, all since 2000, an average of 8.17 student-athletes per season over the last 18 years. Canavan, Harris and Smith became the 16th, 17th and 18th Franklin Pierce players to be four-year National Academic Squad honorees, while Canavan is the program’s first four-time Scholar of Distinction selection. Meanwhile, Graves, Kowesky and Moulton have each earned their third selection in as many years, while McGonagle was honored for the second time in her career. Barnes, Collins, Kowatch, Strassburg and Thibeault were all first-time honorees for the Ravens, who have now had 68 different players honored under the National Academic Squad program.
