No. 10 Baseball Splits Doubleheader At St. Thomas

Dowd collects six hits, drives in four

Cliff Hicks Cliff Hicks went 3-for-5 with two doubles and drove in four runs in the first game of a doubleheader at St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon.

MIAMI GARDEN, Fla. (March 14, 2009) – Freshman catcher Mike Dowd (East Bridgewater, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) hit 6-for-9 and drove in four runs on Sunday afternoon as the No. 10 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader on the road against St. Thomas. The Ravens won the first game, 15-5, before losing the second game, 14-6.

The Franklin Pierce bats led the way in the first game of the day. Fifth-year center fielder Cliff Hicks (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack HS) hit 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a walk, drove in four runs and scored two more, while Dowd finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. In addition, senior first baseman Ted Lerud (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run scored and sophomore shortstop Jose Macias (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) hit 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.

Sophomore right-hander Robbie Beaudoin (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) started on the mound and picked up the win (1-0) for Franklin Pierce in the first game. Over eight innings, he gave up five runs on 10 hits, walked one and struck out two.

The Franklin Pierce offense pounded out six more runs in the second game, though it would not be enough to post another victory. Dowd went 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, drove in a run and scored another to complete his six-hit day. Senior catcher Jacob Ferreira (Westport, Mass./Bishop Stang) hit 2-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk. Sophomore outfielder Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and junior outfielder Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) each went 2-for-4 in the second game, with Rivers knocking a double.

Freshman right-hander Josh Geswell (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) took the loss (0-1) on the mound for the Ravens in the second game. Over 2.1 innings, he gave up four runs on five hits and walked one.

The Ravens (6-5, 0-0 Norteast-10) return to the field on Monday, March 16, for a non-conference contest at Lynn. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at McCusker Sportsplex in Boca Raton, Fla. Franklin Pierce’s first home game is scheduled for Thursday, March 26 against Southern New Hampshire at 3 p.m. St. Thomas (9-17, 5-5 Sun Conference) returns to action on March 17 at the University of Miami.
