A Definition of Athletic Training: Athletic training is a necessary component of every intercollegiate athletics program. A Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is a member of the "Sports Medicine Team." In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the ATC functions as an integral member of the Sports Medicine Team. Athletic Trainers are educated medical specialists in the prevention, assessment, rehabilitation and overall management of injuries sustained by the physically active individual. Athletic Training is an allied health care profession recognized by the American Medical Association.
