Day
Franklin Pierce University is pleased to announce that 130 of its 370 student-athletes (35-percent) from the fall 2008 semester have earned a spot on the University's Athletics Department Honor Roll after earning grade point averages of 3.30 or higher for the fall semester. The student-athletes were recognized in a ceremony at halftime of today's women's lacrosse match against Stonehill College in celebration of National Student-Athlete Day.

National Student-Athlete Day recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, on the playing fields and in their communities. National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994.
On Thursday afternoon, each Franklin Pierce honor roll student-athlete was presented with a certificate recognizing their outstanding achievement in the classroom during the fall semester by Dr. Kim Mooney, Provost at Franklin Pierce and William Costa, the University's Faculty Athletic Representative. Of the 130 student-athletes that recorded a 3.30 GPA or above, 83 (63.9-percent) earned a 3.50 or higher, with 35 (26.9%) achieving a 3.80 or better and an impressive 13 (10%) with perfect 4.00 GPA's for the semester.
Franklin Pierce's 130 honorees are the most for the Athletic Department Honor Roll since the program started three years ago, as are the 3.50, 3.80 and 4.00 splits noted above. Eight of the University's 17 varsity programs had at least one student-athlete record a perfect 4.0 GPA for the fall semester, including three from the Northeast-10 Conference Champion women's soccer team which led all Franklin Pierce varsity teams with 17 honor roll members (out of a roster of 25 student-athletes).
"I wish to congratulate all 130 student-athletes who have earned Athletic Department Honor Roll honors for the fall semester," said Bruce Kirsh, Vice President and Director of Athletics at Franklin Pierce. "The number of student-athletes honored has risen each semester since the program has started, which speaks not just to the quality of student-athletes our coaches are recruiting to our campus on the playing fields, but in the classroom as well. To have 13 student-athletes achieve a 4.0 grade point average last semester is incredible."
